Notes On The Practice of Free-Body

‘The Practice of the Monkey’ has elements in it, which are closely related to the original ideas of parkour, which Georges Hébert spoke about. One of those ideas is—’Move in such a way, as to be useful!’ Look at most of today’s sports! People jogging, doing “exercise”. Isn’t it ridiculous? Isn’t it a waste of energy? Move in such a way as to be useful, or if not that—beautiful!

Precision in movement is preceded by precision in feeling.

A fighter works with what he has.

Fighting without joy is just swinging your limbs!

We might think of balance as a stillness, but actually, it is a movement—a movement in alignment with the force of gravity.

Carrying less and less tension in the internal organs of the body directly corresponds to more and more vitality.

To ‘act as one’, undivided, no part of us fighting against another—we must necessarily be a bit of a fool. Genius does not spring from holding everything firmly in check (e.g. trying to hold the folly out), it springs from allowing a free-arising/subsiding of any and every thing, without becoming entangled.

‘Acting as one’ is just like being a good leader. We must first set the proper example ourselves (i.e. be ‘one’ in our sense of self), and only then the people will follow (i.e. the actions will arise in harmony with that self and each other).

Freeing the reproductive organs is, without a doubt, the way to power.

As a fighter, you must know yourself—fight only for that, for which your Heart fights.
